Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who has been at the center of a gender controversy at the Olympics, has secured a medal in Paris after winning her quarterfinal match early Sunday morning (AEST).
Khelif achieved victory with a unanimous decision from the judges over Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori.
“This is a matter of dignity and honor for every woman or female,” said the 25-year-old Khelif.
“The entire Arab world has known me for years. For years, I have been boxing in international federation competitions. They (International Boxing Association) were unfair to me. But I have God.”
Khelif made global headlines after Italy’s Angela Carini abandoned their round of 16 bouts after just 46 seconds.

Last year, Imane Khelif failed to meet the IBA's gender eligibility criteria, but she has been allowed to compete in the Olympics.
During a previous bout, Italy’s Angela Carini fell to the ground, sobbing in the ring after abandoning the fight. She refused to shake hands with Khelif, citing the physical pain of a punch as the reason for her withdrawal.
In the quarterfinals, it was Khelif who was moved to tears. She broke down after her victory against Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori, realizing the win had secured her an Olympic medal.

Imane Khelif dominated the second round of her quarterfinal match, despite being docked a point for holding and twice wrestling her opponent, Anna Luca Hamori, to the ground in the final round.
Despite previously expressing disappointment at Khelif’s inclusion and sharing an offensive image on social media, Hamori shared a respectful moment with Khelif after the bout.
Khelif now advances to the semifinals in the 66kg category and will fight for gold if she defeats Janjaem Suwannapheng from Thailand.
Khelif’s father, Omar, spoke out on Saturday, saying, “My child is a girl. She was raised as a girl. She is a strong girl – I raised her to work and be brave.”Read More Story
